Fares start at $29 per person for a full day from Cape Town and run to about $382 for a private car carrying up to four. Half days sit around $40 to $54, shared full days between $31 and $67, and private days from $57 per person. The conservation fee at the gate is charged separately unless the fare itself covers it.

Most do not. Some listings here name every park fee in the fare, others sell a fee-inclusive grade alongside the standard one, and the rest ask you to pay at the gate on the day. Each card says which of the three it is, so check that line before you compare two prices.

SANParks charges a daily conservation fee of R245 for an international adult and R120 for a child aged 2 to 11, on the tariff running from 1 November 2025 to 31 October 2026. South African citizens and residents and SADC nationals pay substantially less on production of identification. Fees are set annually, so confirm with SANParks before you travel.

No. Boulders and Cape Point are both cashless and take cards only, so bring a card that works abroad and tell anyone travelling with you to do the same. If your tour covers the fee you will not need it at the colony, but Cape Point may still charge separately.

Gate hours change four times a year. December and January run 07:00 to 19:30, February and March 08:00 to 18:30, April through September 08:00 to 17:00, and October and November 08:00 to 18:30. Winter closing at five in the afternoon is the one that catches people out, so check the month you are travelling in.

An hour is enough for the Foxy Beach boardwalk and the viewing decks at an unhurried pace. Two hours lets you walk the boardwalk, cross to the cove at Boulders Beach and sit with the birds for a while. Most guided days give you an hour, and one half-day run gives you two.

Yes, particularly between December and March and over Easter. Three to five days ahead is usually enough outside the peak weeks, and 24 to 48 hours will often still find a seat in winter. Private cars and the smaller twelve-seat vehicles fill first.

Every tour listed here refunds in full if you cancel at least 24 hours before the start time. Several operators also reserve the right to cancel in bad weather or if too few travellers book, in which case you are refunded. Check the terms on the listing before you pay, because they belong to the operator.

Almost always, but the numbers swing hard through the year. February to August is the breeding season and the beach is at its fullest; in September and October most adults are at sea feeding up for the moult and the colony looks thin. November and December bring them back ashore to moult, when they stand still for weeks.

No, and the phrase is misleading. Approaching, touching or feeding the birds is not permitted anywhere in the reserve, and the colony itself is watched from a raised boardwalk. You can swim at Boulders Beach, in the sheltered cove among the granite, which is a separate beach from the colony.

About 40 km, or an hour's drive without stops, down the False Bay side of the peninsula to Simon's Town. Guided days take longer because they run the Atlantic side first and come back over Chapman's Peak. The Metrorail Southern Line also reaches Simon's Town, and the station is a short walk from the reserve.

Take the half day if the penguins are the point: five hours, an earlier start and up to two hours at the boardwalk. Take a full day if you also want the Cape of Good Hope, the Cape Point lighthouse and Chapman's Peak, which is eight to ten hours and about an hour with the birds.

Nearly all of them. Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope sit in the same reserve at the end of the peninsula, roughly forty minutes beyond Simon's Town, and almost every day listed here pairs them with the colony. One half-day run goes to the colony and back without them.

The Foxy Beach boardwalk is a raised timber walkway with ramps and is the accessible route to the colony. The cove at Boulders Beach is reached by steps and sand and is not. Several operators here declare wheelchair-accessible transport on their listings, so check that line on the tour you are choosing.

It is one of the easiest wildlife stops in South Africa for a family: the walk is flat, the boardwalk is fenced and the birds are metres away. Children aged 2 to 11 pay a reduced conservation fee. A five-hour half day suits younger children better than a ten-hour peninsula run.

Yes. SANParks runs three bands, and South African citizens and residents pay the lowest one, with SADC nationals in between. Identification is required at the gate to claim either. We publish only the international figure, because that is the band we could confirm against a current SANParks tariff.

Yes, through the SANParks reservations portal, or at the gate on arrival. Buying ahead saves a queue in the December and January weeks and nothing else. One traveller here reported trouble with the parks website and simply paid at the gate instead.

The boardwalk takes a set number of people and entry is paused when it is busy rather than turned away, so the wait is measured in minutes. It happens on summer afternoons between about 11:00 and 15:00. Arriving in the first hour after opening avoids it entirely.

R515 for an international adult and R250 for a child, on the same SANParks tariff year as Boulders. It rose from R455 in November 2025, which is why some listings still quote the older figure. It is a separate charge from the colony fee even on the same day.

No tour here includes it. The Flying Dutchman funicular runs from the car park up to the old lighthouse and is bought at Cape Point on the day. The listings quote four different fares for it, so we print none of them; the walk up takes about fifteen minutes if you would rather not pay.

Not on any listing here. The cableway is run by a private company and the ticket is bought separately, which several operators recommend doing online before the day. If you are on a tour that includes Table Mountain, ask which morning slot they are aiming for.

The rest of the day runs. A reviewer travelling in 75 km/h winds found the cable car shut and the tour carried on to Cape Point and the colony as normal; guides usually reorder the stops to try again later. If the mountain is the whole reason you booked, take a tour that can cancel free at 24 hours.

Once a year each bird replaces every feather at once, which takes about three weeks and leaves it unable to swim or feed. At Boulders that falls mainly in November and December. Moulting birds stand motionless in the dunes and look bedraggled, which is normal and not a sign of a sick colony.

A June 2026 census counted 790 breeding pairs, up from 698 the year before, which works out at roughly 2,528 individual birds. That is between 8 and 9 per cent of South Africa's entire African penguin population. The colony began with two pairs in 1982.

September and October are the weeks the adults spend at sea, feeding heavily before they moult. Some birds remain, but the beach is at its emptiest of the year. If your dates are fixed, go early in the morning when the ones ashore are most active.

They can, and they are quick about it. Their bills are built for catching fish and a bird that feels crowded will lunge. Stay on the boardwalk, keep a couple of metres between you and any bird walking on a path, and nothing will happen.

No. Dogs are not allowed anywhere in this section of the reserve, for the obvious reason. There is no kennel at the gate, so leave them at your accommodation.

Take a water bottle and keep anything else packed away. Gulls at Boulders are practised thieves and open food draws them straight to the birds' nests. There are cafes and a shop in Simon's Town, five minutes up the road.

Yes, at the visitor centre by the Foxy Beach entrance, along with a small shop. There is nothing on the boardwalk itself, which is a fifteen-minute walk end to end, so use them before you go through.

The Metrorail Southern Line runs from Cape Town station to Simon's Town, and the last stretch from Muizenberg hugs the water. From Simon's Town station it is a walk of about twenty-five minutes to the reserve, or a short taxi. Check the current timetable before you set out.

There is a car park on Kleintuin Road at the Foxy Beach entrance and more at Seaforth, and both fill from mid-morning in summer. The overflow is street parking with a walk of ten to fifteen minutes. Guided days drop you at the gate and remove the problem.

Simon's Town's main street and naval harbour are five minutes away, the painted bathing huts at Muizenberg and the tidal pool at St James are on the same coast road, and Kalk Bay's harbour sits between them. Most guided days stop at two or three of these.

It is if you are four people, if you are travelling with young children, or if you want to leave the boardwalk when you are ready rather than when a coach is. Some of the private listings are priced per car for up to four, which changes the arithmetic. A solo traveller is nearly always better served by a shared day.

It is customary and it is never in the fare. Ten per cent of the tour price is a normal gesture for a guide and driver who have made the day, and there is no obligation. Cards are not usually taken for this, so carry a little cash.

A windproof jacket and closed shoes. Boulders is sheltered but the Cape Point end of the peninsula is exposed and the wind off the Atlantic is cold from May to September. The boardwalk is open to the sky, so add a hat in any season.

About an hour from Simon's Town on the False Bay road, or a little more if your tour returns over Chapman's Peak. Full days usually arrive back between 17:00 and 19:00. Factor that in if you have a table booked or a flight the same evening.
