Do you need a Boulders Beach tour at all?

Honestly, no — not if you have a car, an early start and only the colony on your list. Driving down the False Bay road takes an hour, the gate takes a card, and the boardwalk takes an hour to walk. A self-drive morning is the cheapest way to see penguins in South Africa and there is nothing wrong with it.

What a tour buys is the rest of the peninsula. Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope are forty minutes past Simon's Town. Chapman's Peak is a toll road on the other coast. Stitching those into one day, around a car park that fills by ten, is the part that goes wrong. It also buys you the hour of arrival, which is the biggest variable at this gate.

What a guided day actually buys you

• The car park you cannot get into. Coaches and minibuses have their own drop-off; you walk straight to the gate.
• Both coasts in one day. The False Bay road one way, Chapman's Peak the other, which is the drive people photograph.
• Cape Point without a car. No train and no bus reaches it.
• A guide who knows the hour. Guides here reorder the stops on the day so that you reach each place when it is quietest.
• The gate fee, sometimes. Some fares cover every park entrance and several sell a grade that does.

A shared vehicle here runs from twelve seats to a sixty-seat double-deck coach, and the card names the figure. Private means your party alone. Some fares here are priced per car for up to four travellers, which changes the arithmetic at three people and flips it at four. A solo traveller is almost always better served by a shared day.

The gate fee, whichever you choose

Boulders is a SANParks reserve and the conservation fee is charged at the gate. Some fares here name every park entrance in their own inclusions. Others sell a fee-inclusive grade alongside the price you first see, and the rest expect you to pay on the day by card. That difference is worth more to you than a ten-dollar gap between two fares. Who should choose something else

If you only want to see penguins and you have a car, drive. If Table Mountain matters more to you than the birds, take a Table Mountain and Cape Point tour and accept an hour at the colony. Travelling with a child who will not sit still for ten hours? Take the half day and come back for Cape Point. And if you came for the sea and the cliffs rather than wildlife, treat the colony as a forty-minute stop on a day about the road.
