Your own vehicle, and every gate already paid

The fault line on this coast is the gate. Most days sold here expect you to pay the conservation fee yourself, by card, at each reserve. Two fares that look ten dollars apart can be forty apart by the evening. This one settles all of it in advance, and very little else on this coast does.

What you get for the difference is a private vehicle and a route you can move. The stops are the standard peninsula set — the Bo-Kaap, the mountain, Camps Bay, Chapman's Peak, the ostrich farm, the Cape Point reserve, the old lighthouse, the Cape of Good Hope, Simon's Town and the colony — but nobody else is waiting for you at any of them, which on a nine-hour day is worth more than it sounds.

Table Mountain is still weather. One traveller here found the cableway shut in 75 km/h winds and wrote that it did not take away from the day, because the driver reshaped the route around it. That is what a private vehicle buys: the option to come back to the mountain in the afternoon, or to skip it and spend the time somewhere else.

An hour at the boardwalk is the standard allowance and it falls in the afternoon here. If you want the colony in its quiet first hour instead, the Boulders Beach guided tours include shorter runs that leave earlier.

2. First stop — twenty-five minutes in the Bo-Kaap.

6. Afternoon — the old lighthouse and an hour at the Cape of Good Hope.

In Cape Town, at one of three named points: the Hyatt Regency at 126 Buitengracht Street, where you wait on the hotel patio; Hotel Sky at 9 Lower Long Street in the Foreshore; and The Westin on Lower Long Street opposite the convention centre. The listing names those three and does not state pickup at your own address.

Ask which applies to you when you book rather than on the morning. A private vehicle will usually come closer where the road allows, but the named points are what the fare promises.

Know before you go

• Only lunch and tips are extra. Every park gate, the Table Mountain ticket and the Chapman's Peak toll are already in the fare.
• Wind can close the cableway. The rest of the route runs regardless, and a private driver can come back to it later in the day.
• It is nine to ten hours. A long day by any measure. Reviewers who enjoyed it most say they were expecting the length.
• Twelve is the vehicle maximum. On the private grade the vehicle is yours alone; the small-group option shares it.
• The colony stop is in the afternoon. Good light, more people. The early-morning boardwalk belongs to the half days.
• Take a jacket for the mountain. The plateau and Cape Point are both exposed, in every season.
