How to Visit Boulders Beach: Tickets, Hours, Tours and What to Know
The short answer. Boulders is a section of Table Mountain National Park. You pay a daily conservation fee at the gate, by card only, and for an international adult it is R245, with R120 for a child aged 2 to 11. The gate opens at four different times through the year, closing as early as 17:00 from April to September. Give the boardwalk an hour, arrive in the first hour after opening, and check whether your tour fare covers the gate before you compare two prices.
Almost everything that goes wrong at Boulders is one of three things: arriving with cash, arriving after the winter gate has shut, or arriving in October and finding half the colony at sea. What you actually pay, and to whom
The tour operator sells you the journey. SANParks sells you the reserve. Those are two separate transactions and they are the single most common source of surprise at this gate, because a fare that looks ten dollars cheaper than another can end up forty dollars more expensive by the end of the day.
For the tariff year running from 1 November 2025 to 31 October 2026, an international adult pays R245 and a child aged 2 to 11 pays R120. Under-2s are free. South African citizens and residents pay the lowest of three bands and SADC nationals sit between, both on production of identification at the gate. This is the detail that catches summer visitors out in winter. The reserve does not keep one timetable.

How long to give it
An hour covers the Foxy Beach boardwalk and its decks at an unhurried pace. That is what most guided days allow, and it is enough. Two hours lets you walk the boardwalk, cross to the swimming cove and sit for a while, and one half-day run from the city gives you exactly that.
- Pay at the gate — card, adult and child bands, keep the receipt: it is a daily fee, not a single entry.
- Walk the boardwalk — fifteen minutes end to end at a stroll, longer if you stop.
- Stand at the last deck — it sits directly above the colony and it is the closest you will get.
- Cross to the cove — steps and sand, and the only water in the reserve you may swim in.
- Allow twenty minutes for Simon's Town — the main street is five minutes up the road and most tours stop there.
Which tours cover the gate
Three answers, and every card says which applies. Some fares name every park entrance in their own inclusions, so nothing is left at a booth. Others sell a fee-inclusive grade alongside the price you first see, which you choose at checkout. Most expect you to pay on the day. When the birds are actually there
The colony is not the same size every month, which is the fact no booking page tells you. February to August is the breeding season and the beach is at its fullest. September and October are the weeks the adults spend at sea, feeding heavily before they moult, and the beach is at its emptiest. November and December are the moult itself, when the birds stand ashore and motionless for about three weeks.
A June 2026 census counted 790 breeding pairs at Boulders, up from 698 the year before, which is roughly 2,528 individual birds. The background to that number, and what the species' 2024 uplisting to Critically Endangered means, is on the African penguins.
Getting there, and the car park
Boulders is about 40 km from central Cape Town, an hour by road down the False Bay side to Simon's Town. The Metrorail Southern Line reaches Simon's Town station, from where it is a twenty-five minute walk or a short taxi. Both routes, and the two coast roads, are on how to get to Boulders Beach.
The car park on Kleintuin Road fills by mid-morning from December to February and over Easter. Seaforth has a second one a short walk round the shore. A guided day removes the problem entirely by dropping you at the gate.
Three things people get wrong
- They bring cash. The gate has no cash lane. This is the one that actually stops people entering.
- They assume the fare covers the park. Most do not, and Cape Point is a separate charge again on the same day.
- They book October blind. The colony thins in September and October, and a visitor expecting the photographs is the one who leaves disappointed.
What to take
A card, closed shoes, a windproof layer in any season, a hat, sunscreen and water. Leave food packed away, because the gulls here are practised.
